allergy today issue 134 (spring 2010)

In this issue:

Climate change and the allergy epidemic

Hornets in Alaska, pollen seasons stretching for months on end. What on earth is going on? Whether you believe global warming is a conspiracy theory or are doing what you can to minimise your carbon footprint, the fact is the world is changing for the average allergy sufferer.

Suck it up!

Because dust mites and mould hide away in carpets, the general recommendation is to remove wall-to-wall carpeting and replace this with hard flooring. But removing carpets is expensive and a major imposition to most families, and is not always recommended in the first instance. So you need to be armed with a vacuum cleaner and use it regularly.

Eczema: going back to basics

Eczema occurs in around one in five infants, but usually improves with age. Many people who have eczema, especially babies, either have or will develop other allergies. There are currently no cures available; however eczema can be effectively treated.

Samter’s triad

What do asthma, a runny nose and reactions to aspirin have in common? Nothing, you may think; but these symptoms are part of a non-allergic reaction that is affecting an increasing number of adults.
