Why do so many New Zealand children suffer from illnesses other countries manage to prevent? Senior doctors say there is a crisis in the way we manage our children's health, and it has little to do with hospitals and much to do with homes. As rents, food and petrol prices increase the squeeze has gone on low income households. Many homes are overcrowded, poorly insulated and badly heated. Food is poor, and sometimes not there at all, and medicine is a luxury. Professor Innes Asher is Head of Paediatrics at Auckland University, and a paediatrician at Starship Hospital. She says the time has come to act.
Throughout the hospital, doctors, nurses, and everyone, feels a similar kind of despair.
