anapen or epipen?

There are currently two brands of adrenaline autoinjectors available in New Zealand, Anapen® and EpiPen®. Each of these is also available in a Junior version (EpiPen®Jr and Anapen®Jr).

The Allergy New Zealand Medical Advisory Panel advises that when used following the manufacturers instructions, both brands deliver the same single pre-measured dose of adrenaline intramuscularly.

As Anapen®  and EpiPen® products have different administration techniques, only one brand should be prescribed per individual and their ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis must be specific for the brand they have been prescribed. (ASCIA adrenaline autoinjector FAQ’s)

It is recommended that you practice with a ‘trainer pen’ when you purchase your autoinjector. Anapen and Epipen ‘trainer pens’ have no needle or adrenaline, so you, your family and friends can safely practice administering the autoinjector.

You may like to discuss the options with your specialist or family doctor.
