Contrary to popular opinion, anxiety is not outgrown and anxious children become anxious adults. Without support or intervention, anxiety can lead to depression, which is pertinent considering New Zealand has one of the highest rates of depression and teen suicide in the developed world. World expert in anxiety and clinical psychologist Professor Paula Barrett will present a seminar on anxiety in children, with a particular focus on children with food allergy and/or eczema. Professor Barrett developed the scientifically validated FRIENDS for Life programme, which has been recognised by the World Health Organization as best practice for the prevention and treatment of anxiety and depression in children and adolescents. The programme was introduced in New Zealand and in countries as wide-ranging as Canada, Norway, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the United States, Hong Kong, Mexico, Iceland, Ireland, Japan, Saudi Arabia and Portugal. For more information on the FRIENDS programme, go to www.lifepaths.org.nz. How do you interpret skin prick and RAST for IgE-mediated allergies?Leading allergy specialist, Dr Vincent St Aubyn Crump is presenting a seminar on understanding skin prick and RAST testing for IgE-mediated allergies at the Allergy New Zealand National Conference. With between 2-4 per cent of the population suffering from food allergy, and up to 20 per cent suffering from environmental allergies – not to mention latex, drug or insect sting allergy - it is important to know what your patient is allergic to in order to help them manage their allergy. Dr St Aubyn Crump will explain the current challenges with testing and offer practical information that can help you in your practice. Allergies are increasing and it is not always easy to confirm the diagnosis, since the interpretation of the tests can sometimes prove difficult. Dietetic management of food allergy in children and adultsOnce a person has been diagnosed with a food allergy, it is important to have dietitian input as part of the patient’s ongoing management. Avoiding cow’s milk and wheat in particular can have long-term health effects unless these foods are replaced appropriately. Anna Richards is one of New Zealand’s leading dietitians in the complicated field of food allergy and intolerance. She has years of experience working with children and adults who are avoiding more than one food and works closely with allergy specialists. She will present on how to manage multiple food allergies. Health professionals are able to register for the for Saturday and Sunday conference programme at Allergy New Zealand membership rates. Click here. CMEAllergy New Zealand National Conference has been endorsed by The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP) and has been approved for up to 11.5 hours CME for General Practice Education Programme Stage 2 (formerly AVE), CPD online and Maintenance of Professional Standards (MOPS) purposes. |
