I am pregnant and both my partner and I have a history of allergies. What can I do to prevent food allergies?

Family history of allergic disease, particularly if both parents and/or a sibling have allergies, are at increased risk of developing allergies.

Environmental factors also play a part and it may be possible to reduce the risk by:
  • Not smoking during pregnancy
  • Ensuring baby is not exposed to cigarette smoke
  • Breast feed baby for at least 6 months
  • Introduce solids after 4 months

In high risk infants, introduction of cows milk or soy formula is not recommended in babies under 4-6 months.

Refer to ASCIA for more information.

It is important to remember to always get medical advice from your doctor or specialist.
